This Thomas MARTIN could possibly be the brother of Jane/Jennifer MARTIN who married John TRELOAR
Illogan Registers:
Thomas MARTIN sojourner in this parish and Elizabeth GILE spinster married by Banns 4th November 1786. Thomas signed Elizabeth X
The following were all listed as being the children of a Thomas and Elizabeth MARTIN:
Thomas baptised 1st June 1788
Richard baptised 25th November 1792
Jennifer baptised 31st May 1795
Grace Blewit baptised 4th October 1796
Jennifer baptised 23rd June 1797
The Thomas MARTIN who married Mary PHILLIPS and had John Phillips, Thomas, Richard and Mary was aged 60 in the 1851 Census so could be him but no proof. The names Jane and Jennifer seemed to be used for the same person in Cornwall – don’t ask me why! So, it could be that Jane/Jennifer who married John TREOAR and Thomas MARTIN were brother and sister. Needs proof of some sort though.
Mary (PHILLIPS) MARTIN’s name does not appear in the 1841 Census. Thomas has a Housekeeper living with him and the children John, Thomas, Richard and Mary. In 1851 he has a different person living with him described as a House Servant and Thomas and Richard are still at home. Thomas’ occupation in 1851 was Coal Weigher. In 1861 he is living with Elizabeth JOHNS Housekeeper and he is aged 71. He is not in the 1871 Census. Although he does not have a wife living with him in the Census returns he is described as married not widower so don’t know if that means that she left him or was in the Asylum or something as his housekeeper was described as a widow.
John Phillips MARTIN son of Thomas and Mary married Sarah COCK March Qtr. 1846 Reduth area. In the Census returns, his ocupation is given as Lime Burner. In the 1851 Census he has two children Mary P. aged 4 and Thomas aged 7 months. In 1861 he has more children Richard aged 6 and Emma J. aged 2. In 1871 his sons Thomas and Richard as still living with him and his wife but the girls are not mentioned. In 1881 Sarah is described as a widow and has her daughter Mary SLEEMAN also listed as a widow living with her and John P. MARTN son aged 2. I don’t know if this means that Mary had a son after her husband died and he was known by her maiden name or not – needs checking out.
Thomas son of Thomas and Mary MARTIN emigrated to Australia
